In the wake of recent bans around New York City on Cell Phones in cars, smoking in public places and trans fats in restaurants, the Big Apple is now planning on taking cell phones out of your hands around the city as well.
Senator Carl Kruger is leading the charge behind what he is calling “IPod Oblivion”, and would also include bands on MP3 players. The new legislation, which would ban people from using an MP3 player, cell phone, Blackberry or any other electronic device while crossing the street in New York City and surrounding major cities, was prompted by two recent pedestrian deaths in Senator Kruger’s Albany district, including a 23-year-old man who was struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod. If things go through, you could get slapped with a 100$ ticket if you get caught crossing the street jabbering away on your cell or answering an email on your Blackberry.
While I certainly dont want to see people killed as a result of being in the “Cell Phones Zone” or jamming to their Ipod and walking into oncoming traffic. It seems more like a personal responsibilty issue to me, not another thing to legislate. But it appears the NYC is on a banning roll, so be prepared!
