Blackberry’s go dark and users go beserk

gone-dark-again.jpg

Blackberry service went down for about 12 hours yesterday and once again the wolves were nipping at RIM’s jugular. Some don’t seem to believe it was due to a software upgrade as that is just too similar to the 2007 outage. Others just want to vent their anger because they have come to depend on this service and don’t want to think it as unreliable in any way. I personally think that 28 hours of downtime in 8+ years is a pretty impressive track record and just indicates how reliable they have been.

And yet I kept looking to the screen hoping to see a flood of backlogged emails coming through, and yet nothing happened. I ponder what might have happened if the outage had lasted much longer to not only me but to our nations capitol where these devices would need to be surgically detached from most users. Would it be like the Old Testament, real wrath-of-God type stuff? With fire and brimstone coming down from the skies? Would rivers and seas begin to boil? Possibly a start of forty years of darkness? Would there be earthquakes and volcanoes… and would the dead begin rising from the grave? Perhaps even dogs and cats would start living together and thus create mass hysteria. Probably not, but hey its kinda fun to write about politicians being completely lost without instant access to corporate and government email systems.

Hey it wasn’t all bad, it gave power users the opportunity to get one of those BlackBerry Massages that all the kids are talking about. No word on if a happy ending is included but it can’t hurt to ask.

Mobile Firefox coming to a cell phone near you

Are you tired of your phone’s web browser? Does it stink? Wouldn’t you like to be one of the cool kids that will have Mobile Firefox?

The little browser that could will strike again, only this time Firefox will invade the cell phone market, as specs on mobile devices are finally getting up to snuff to run a nice browser.

Mozilla has said that you will be able to run Firefox extensions with the mobile browser, so they already get bonus points for including one of the best features of Firefox in the mobile app.

The app won’t be ready until after the release of Firefox 3, but I’m pretty pumped to see what these guys have in store for us.

On Our Speedial - Verizon’s VCast TV Phone

We have been hearing lots about the Verizon TV Phones of late, and last week got to see a nice visual thanks to Engadget. The picture is also on the right here. The new TV Phone, the second one from Verizon. This one seems to trump the first one though, vcast.jpg and has a snazzy little swivel screen to boot. Other features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and microSD expansion. Sounds like all the goods and I’m sure it will sell well for Verizon. What Im hoping for though its a TV phone that has a wider reach of programming, Im sure it’s just around the corner.

More on Verizon’s MediaFlo services can be had if you follow this link.

On Our Speedial - The Samsung Smart F700

Its not too difficult to see why the new Samsung Ultra Smart F700 is getting so much attention from the cell phone blogs around the web of late. Not only does it look pretty sharp but has some great features to boot. If the 7.2 megabit HSPDA doesnt impress you, there is always the slide out QWERTY board, (we love to say QWERTY) and a 2.78 inch touch screensamsungultra.jpg with a drag and drop feature and full HTML browsing, bluetooth, and a 5MP camera, with auto focus, if you need it. But, as our Engadget buddies point out, the ole US doesnt get the phone, but rather a more stripped down version. Um, wow, thats still quite an impressive piece, could be the biggest challenger to the IPhone? Ill say one thing, Samsung is not the company I expected to compete with the IPhone. Some are already labeling it the IPhone Killer, but, thats not likely to happen without a stateside release. It gets its official unveiling at next week’s 3GSM World Congress, a telecommunications exhibition in Barcelona.
