“Ban Happy” New York City to outlaw Cell Phones

In the wake of recent bans around New York City on Cell Phones in cars, smoking in public places and trans fats in restaurants, the Big Apple is now planning on taking cell phones out of your hands around the city as well.

Senator Carl Kruger is leading the charge behind what he is calling “IPod Oblivion”, and would also include bands on MP3 players. The new legislation, which would ban people from using an MP3 player, cell phone, Blackberry or any other electronic device while crossing the street ineconomy.jpg New York City and surrounding major cities, was prompted by two recent pedestrian deaths in Senator Kruger’s Albany district, including a 23-year-old man who was struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod. If things go through, you could get slapped with a 100$ ticket if you get caught crossing the street jabbering away on your cell or answering an email on your Blackberry.

While I certainly dont want to see people killed as a result of being in the “Cell Phones Zone” or jamming to their Ipod and walking into oncoming traffic. It seems more like a personal responsibilty issue to me, not another thing to legislate. But it appears the NYC is on a banning roll, so be prepared!

And now…. some better cell phone blogs!

As the new kid on the block in the cell phone blogging game, we here at Cell Phones Zone would like to pay our respects to those bloggers that have slaved over a hot laptop for many more months than us today. There are lots of great ones out there, but we will just do a current news rundown on a few today that you can probably expect to see us reading and linking to pretty regularly.

  1. Engadget is kinda the king of technology blogging, and they have a cell phone divisionwatchphone.jpg that is pretty incredible as well. Yesterday they brought a cell phone watch to our attention that is being made by SMS Technology. I have to give them the originality award at least, as Ive not seen this yet. But I’m not sure how big the market is for something like this. You do get the “James Bond” factor though.
  2. The Nokia Cell Phone Blog, another great source for cell info, has some sleek photos up sonyeric.jpgtoday of 8 brand new handsets from Sony Ericsson. I especially like the look of this W880/888. Maybe its the black and orange color scheme or possibly the fact that its one of the new Walkmen phones that makes it appealing. The early reports though are showing this one is a bit light on the feature side. And of course, we dont think it can compete in the music category with the upcoming IPhone.

What kind of cell phone do you have?

Welcome to the Cell Phones Zone! Yeah, we know the title is a cheesy shot at rhyming, but cmon, what would you have called it? Anyway, glad to be here talking about what is certainly one of the biggest obessions in an already technology obsessed culture we live in.

Its no secret that cell phone companies like Verizon, Cingular andsprintphone.gif Sprint are already in huge competition with each other to try and release the newest and hottest handsets. Its so extreme that it seems a handful of new phones are announced every day. So, there should be plenty to talk about here. But, it would be my first and ongoing question for any readers that may stumble onto our little blog here……”What type of cell phone do you have?”

I’ll start, I carry the Samsung SPH-A920 “Music Master”, although I must admit, I dont listen to music on the phone at all. Ive had it for about a year now and its a pretty good phone, I dont have many complaints. I use Sprint for my service and also can’t really complain about the service so far. I have to say though, I really am drooling over the looks of the new IPhone though, but its not gonna be easy to save!
